European-led efforts to resolve the Israeli Palestinian conflict are being resisted by Prime MInister Benjamin Netanyahu.<br /><br /> After his meeting with his Italian counterpart on Monday, the Israeli leader is due for more talks today with US Secretary of state John Kerry in London.<br /><br /> Israel has warned the US it expects Washington’s support in vetoing a Jordanian backed draft United Nations resolution putting a 2016 deadline on a withdrawl from land Palestinians seek for a state.<br />It’s territory Israel occupied in the 1967 Middle East war.<br /><br /> France is also leading a bid among Europeans to draft a resolution with a less definitive timetable before Israel’s March 17 election.<br /><br /> Although the US has said it could not accept the Jordanian backed, Palestinian-drafted proposal, Kerry has indicated the US position is not yet fixed and a modified resolution could still be of interest.<br /><br /> The Palestinians are hoping the draft resolution will be put in some form before the UN Security Council on Wednesday.<br /><br /> Since Israeli Palestinian peace talks collapsed last April several European parliaments have voted in support of Palestinian statehood in non.binding UN resolutions.
CHINA — China has been accused of leveraging massive loans to smaller, developing countries in order to take over assets and construct military bases in said countries. <br />In a practice referred to as "debt-trap diplomacy" or "debt colonialism," huge loans are given to countries that will be unable to repay, forcing smaller countries to give up major concessions when the loans default, according to The Center for Global Development. <br /><br />Countries like Pakistan, Djibouti, Fiji, Montenegro, Maldives, Kyrgyzstan and Laos all owe China large amounts of money. <br /><br />Last year, Sri Lanka owed more that $1 billion in debts to China, so it was forced to hand over a port to Chinese government-owned business on a 99-year lease. <br /><br />Infrastructure loans to build roads and ports linked to the "Belt and Road" initiative to have led to countries owing millions or billions in debt, often accounting for large percentages of the countries' GDP.<br /><br />China may be looking to leverage its debt in the Pacific in order to increase its military footprint in the South Pacific, The Times reports.<br />In April, China informed Vanuatu it had intentions of building a military base. According to the Sun, Vanuatu owes $246 million to China.
